This Formative guides the students through writing an analytical body paragraph.

In this Formative, you will use examples from your ad to write another of your paper's three body paragraphs. We'll walk through the steps together: just follow the instructions and ask for help when you need it. 😄

Open your ad in a separate tab first, please.
I'm all set.
I need help.
2
Take a moment to paste the URL of your ad here, so you have it handy.
3
Which rhetorical strategy do you see most clearly in your ad? This will be the strategy you focus on analyzing in your paper.
appeal to logos
appeal to ethos
appeal to pathos
Help, please.
4
You'll need to cite your ad in several questions coming up, so take a second to open Ad Paper: Steps 1&2.

The parenthetical citation you need is your answer to question 7.
Enter it here, so you have it handy. You can copy and paste or retype.

Got it? Onwards!
5
Let's take a look at how your ad uses allusions. Many ads use allusions to be funny or to trigger a specific reaction in their audiences.

Do you notice allusions in your ad?
Yes!
I think so, but I'm not sure. Help, please.
I don't see any. Maybe I should skip this. Help, please.
6
Ready to come up with ideas?

Brainstorm a list of the allusions in your ad.
Don't worry about complete sentences; just get your thoughts down. Aim for several examples on your list. You need two for your paper.

7
Next, write one complete sentence that connects your ad's use of allusions to its rhetorical strategy.

Please don't write more than one sentence; please do pay attention to your commas, periods, and capitalization.
8
That's a topic sentence, right?
Of course it is.
I see the pattern here.
Coming soon: another body paragraph.
9
Choose one example from your brainstormed list (#6) that you would like to put in your paper.

Describe it. Remember, your reader hasn't seen your ad, so be clear. This is a piece of evidence or concrete detail.

Use one or two complete sentences. Put your parenthetical citation (from #4) at the end of your sentence before the period. Watch your commas, periods, and capitalization, please.

10
Write at least two complete commentary/analysis sentences that explain...
--the allusion
and
--how the allusion supports the ad's rhetorical strategy

You must have at least two sentences, but feel free to write more.

Also, watch your commas, periods, and capitalization, please.
11
This is a copying-and pasting question. You don't need to write anything new.

First, paste in your topic sentence from #7. Next, paste in your concrete detail sentence from #9. Then paste in your commentary sentences from #10.
12
One example down, one to go. Ready?
Ready.
I would like some help first, please.
13

That's another body paragraph done! It needs revision and a concluding sentence, of course, but we'll do that later. Take a bow.
Yippee!
Oh yeah, I'm good.
That was hard, but I got it.
Please help.

We're finished analyzing allusions now.

If you have completed three parts of Step 5, all your body paragraphs are written! Move on to Step 6 (Write your Conclusion).

Otherwise, move to another part of Step 5.
I'm ready for Step 6.
I'm still working on Step 5.
I need help figuring out what to do next, please.
