Lesson Objectives:
1. Students will be able to identify what kinds of mutations are occuring in a model.
2. Students will explain why single mutation may not cause any change in exhibiting the related trait.

NGSS:
HS-LS3-1: Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in coding the instructions for characteristics traits passed from parents to offspring.
HS-LS3-2: Make and defend a claim based on evidence that inheritable genetic variations may result from: (1) new genetic combinations through meiosis, (2) viable errors occurring during replication, and/or (3) mutations caused by environmental factors.
1.

What form of mutation is occuring here?

2.

Describe briefly the process involved in this example of duplication.

3.

What kind of mutation is occuring here?

4.

Describe briefly the process in this example of deletion.

5.

Briefly explain why all these forms of mutations can cause the creation of a new allele, but may not as well.
