"The Purse Snatcher"

Dr. Patel was at the police station when Bumbles Brasoon, an inexpert petty crook, was brought in for questioning.

"The charge is purse snatching outside the movie theater," snapped the police officer.

"It's a case of mistaken identity!" wailed Bumbles.

"The complaintant, Mrs. Fogerty, didn't give you her pocketbook, now did she?" chided the police officer.

"No, but the real crook did," said Bumbles. "I'll tell you what happened, and it's the truth. I swear! I was walking past Acme thinking about getting a job collecting carts when the weather improves. Suddenly I hear this woman scream. This big kid with long hair comes hot-footing past me, carrying a purse. He ducks around the theater and into the alley. I try to chase him down. I'm making great headway on him, and he knows I've got him - there's no way out of that alley. So he throws the purse at me and slips inside the the back door to the theater. So there I am with the purse when this woman comes barreling around the building with this cop here," concluded Bumbles. "I'm innocent!"

The police officer sighed, "The truth is that Mrs. Fogerty didn't get a look at who snatched her purse. Bumbles story is weak, but it might be true. What do you think, Dr. Patel?"

"Anxious Nephew"

"I'm worried about my Uncle Phil." Stephen Bates' voice was anxious over the phone. "He failed to keep a dinner engagement with me tonight. Do you mind meeting me at his place - say in half an hour?"

Dr. Patel agreed and we was waiting outside the building when Stephen Bates arrived by cab. The doorman, recognizing Stephen Bates, let them in the building.

Stephen explained to the doorman that he was worried about his uncle. "My uncle thought he was being followed the last couple of days," said Stephen. "He keeps a great deal of cash in a wall safe in his den. Unfortunately, he isn't exactly secretive about it."

"That's the first I've heard of it," responded the doorman. "I didn't even know he had a safe in his apartment. Well, let's go upstairs and check on him. I'm sure everything is just fine. I haven't seen anyone lurking about."

In the elevator, Stephen stammered, "When he didn't show up for dinner, I telephoned him. I got no answer."

Leaving the elevator on the 14th floor, the three men rapidly walked to the door of Philip Bates' apartment. It was unlocked. The entrance hall burned the only light.

"Better have a look in the den," suggested Dr. Patel.

Stephen nodded and stepped out of the way so the doorman could lead the way. The doorman paused at the door to the darkened room. "There's a floor lamp in the corner," he said, and disappeeared into the darkness. An instand later the room ws bathed in light. Directly behind the desk a small oval safe door was open. The doorman stood in a corner, one hand on the lamp, an expression of alarm twisting his face. He stepped back over the unmoving form of Phil Bates, who lay at his feet. "I-is he dead?"

Stephen and Dr. Patel rushed over and knelt beside Philip Bates. Dr. Patel responded, "No, a nasty blow on the head, but not fatal." He turned and looked directly into the culprit's eyes and whispered, "Lucky for you!"

THE STORY:
Five felons named Dave, don, Darrell, Dana, and Dennis escaped from prison at the same time. They each had a different nickname they had earned while in prison. Their nicknames were Badger, Fingers, Dodger, Grifty, and Shifty. They had all committed different crimes to get themselves sentenced to prison; their crimes were burglary, treason, arson, fraud, and robbery. They all were recaptured at different times and so had been free for different lengths of time: 2 days, 4 days, 6 days, 14 days, and 21 days. Based on the clues, match the felons with their nicknames, their crimes, and the lengths of time they were free before being recaptured.

THE CLUES:
1. Grifty, who wsa in prison for robbery, was not the first to be recaptured and was free for twice as long as badger.

2. Badger, imprisoned for fraud, was the first to be recaptured.

3. Dennis was free for two weeks.

4. Dana was recaptured after Dave and Darrell, but two other felons remained free after he was recaptured.

5. Darrell was not Grifty.
