Classfication of Settlements
1) Farmstead - single farm with various outbuildings. Commercial farmers in SA.
2) Rural Hamlet - loose grouping of a few farmsteads. e.g. Klapmuts near Paarl.
3) Village - denser grouping of farmsteads. Essential functions only. e.g. Xhosa villages.
4) Town - A densely populated urban area. Number of functions increases . e.g. Wellington.
5) City - Wide range of functions including headquarters of a region's administration. e.g. Port Elizabeth.
6) Metropolis - A main city surrounded by dependent towns. e.g. Cape Town with Durbanville, Kuils River, Fish Hoek and Simonstown.
7) Conurbation - A large city surrounded by a number of dependent cities and towns that form a continuous urban area. e.g. Johannesburg surrounded by Nigel, Springs, Brakpan, Benoni, Boksburg, Alberton,
Kempton Park, Germiston, Krugersdorp and Randfontein.
8) Megalopolis – A number of large cities are “joined together” (no rural areas separate the cities) e.g. Boston to Washington in the USA.

Nucleated Rural Settlement Types
Regular - settlements are equidistant. E.g. Vaalharts settlement. Equal distribution of resources.
Random - settlements are arbitrarily distributed over the landscape. Unequal distribution of resources.
Clustered - settlements grouped around a resource. E.g. water in an oasis.
Linear - settlements are situated in a line along a river or road or in a constricted valley.
